Industry Case Study: Marriott Camelback Inn Adobe Restoration
Challenge
Situation: Marriott wanted to save and restore the adobe lodge building, which was built in the 1930s, back to its original look. Additions that had been added through the years were removed, and much of the adobe was damaged in the process. Major repairs were needed to bring this historic building back to its original charm.
Challenges: The largest challenge was locating the correct materials to make the repairs. The original bricks were hand-made from a mixture of clay, sand, and straw. The repairs needed to be made with similar material for both structural and aesthetic reasons.
Solution
Solution: It was discovered that some of the building had been removed because it was structurally unsound. This material was salvaged and used to make new bricks on site. It was also ground and re-hydrated to use as patch material and mortar.
Conclusion: This historic icon in Paradise Valley, AZ, was saved from the wrecking ball and restored back to its 1930’s charm. The Marriott staff, including Mr. Marriott himself, was very pleased with the restoration and will enjoy sharing this bit of history with their guests for years to come.
