Industry case Study: UPS Distribution Center Mezzanine Addition
Challenge
Project Scope: The addition of a new conveyor system on a mezzanine above existing conveyors was needed to handle their expanding business.
The Challenge: Installing a foundation system to carry the load of the new addition without having to remove the existing conveyors.
Solution
The Solution: Several options were considered. Because of the soil conditions below the slab, large column footings were considered but this would have required removing the existing conveyor system which was not an option. The conclusion was that the best option was the installation of pre-construction helical piles to provide a deep foundation system with much smaller pile caps to carry the load of each column.
The Challenge of Installing the Helical Piles: Having to be able to reach up 10 feet and 20 feet over the existing equipment presented a challenge to install some of the piles while other areas had to be accessed under existing equipment with very low overhead.
