Industry Case Study: SRP Navajo Generating Station
Challenge
Situation: A total of 25 existing guy wire anchors needed to be replaced due to breaking from corrosion. The new anchors needed to be capable of resisting 45000 pounds of pullout load and have corrosion protection.
Challenges: No soils reports were available but sandstone had been encountered at depths from 3 to 8 feet below grade. Some underground utility locations were unable to be determined and the fear of drilling into them was a concern.
Solution
Solution: Install Titan Injection-Bored Micro-Piles with a carbide bit to penetrate the sandstone and metalized bars to prevent future corrosion. The Micro-Piles were installed to a depth of 20’ while grout was injected through the hollow bars and jet openings on the drill bits to provide pressure grout penetration while drilling. Vacuum excavation (Pot-holing) was done in some areas to determine the location of underground utilities. Then Bollards were installed to prevent vehicles from hitting the anchors
Conclusion: The project was completed on schedule with no disruption to the plant’s operation and provided a long-term solution to their guy anchor problem. This created another happy customer.
